Come join us on a very special pilgrimage to France, Spain & Portugal in the quincentenary of the birth of St. Teresa.
We will begin in the beautiful Pyrenees Mountains of Southern France, where from April 30-May 2, we will join the priestly order of The Institute of Christ the King’s annual Lourdes pilgrimage with His Eminence Raymond Cardinal Burke, Patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta. Attend a Pontifical High Mass at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, celebrated by Cardinal Burke, and join in a Rosary and Candlelight Procession concluding with an Episcopal Blessing by His Eminence. Also visit the Grotto of Massabielle and experience the healing waters of Lourdes.
After three nights in Lourdes we will travel over the Spanish highlands for a night in Burgos (burial place of El Cid) and two nights in ancient Castile, visiting Segovia & Avila; land of the great Carmelite mystics – Sts. John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila, celebrating the 500th anniversary of St. Teresa’s birth.
From Castile, we will travel southwest to Central Portugal for the last three nights of the pilgrimage, visiting the Marian Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima, a marvelous haven of peace, and the old world maritime city of Lisbon; birthplace of St. Anthony, the beloved finder of lost articles!
Day 1 – Evening departure from Newark Airport on-board a flight to Lisbon and on to Toulouse, France.
Day 2 – Late morning arrival in Toulouse and transfer to Lourdes at the foothills of the stunning Pyrenees Mountains of southwestern France where the Blessed Virgin Mary visited St. Bernadette eighteen times in 1858. Mid-afternoon arrival and check-in at our hotel near the gateway to the Sanctuary of Lourdes where we will spend the next three evenings. Late afternoon visit to the Sanctuary to see an orientation video and walk along the river that Bernadette was crossing over when she first saw the “beautiful lady” in the Grotto of Massabielle. All are welcome to join in the nightly rosary & candlelight Procession.
Day 3 – During the next two days we will join with the Institute of Christ the King in their annual Lourdes pilgrimage events. Today’s highlight will be a Solemn High Mass celebrated by Monsignor Gilles Wach, Founder and Prior of the Institute of Christ the King, with Cardinal Burke assisting. We will also participate in the life-size Stations of the Cross, a conference by His Eminence, Vespers and Candlelight procession.
Day 4 – Today we will join the Institute of Christ the King in the closing of their Lourdes pilgrimage with a Solemn Pontifical Mass celebrated by Cardinal Burke, a conference by Monsignor Wach and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament with singing of the Te Deum in Thanksgiving and conclusion of the pilgrimage at around 3 PM. This afternoon there will be time available to experience the healing waters that have been flowing near the Lourdes Grotto since the time of the apparitions.
Day 5 – Morning walking tour in the steps of St. Bernadette to visit the places connected to her life in Lourdes. Afternoon departure on a scenic drive over the Spanish highlands to Burgos, Spain, once the capital city of the kings of Castile. Upon a late-afternoon arrival, visit the ancient cathedral, masterfully constructed on sloping ground, with one end two stories higher than the other. See the tomb of El Cid, champion of the 11th Cnt. Spanish Reconquista. Overnight in Burgos.
Day 6 – Morning departure into the region of Castile to visit two of the finest medieval fortified towns in history; Segovia & Avila, homes to two of the greatest mystics of the Church and 16th century reformers of the Carmelite Order – St. John of the Cross & St. Teresa of Jesus. Upon a mid-day arrival in Segovia, visit the Carmel wherein is the tomb of St. John of the Cross. Also see the city’s 1000-year-old Roman aqueduct. Continue on to Avila, the home of St. Teresa of Jesus and one of Europe’s last remaining completely walled cities. Early evening check-in at our hotel in Avila for the next two nights.
Day 7 – Full day to visit the sites in Avila connected with St. Teresa; the cathedral containing many of her relics, the crypt built over the house of her birth and the Convent of the Incarnation that she founded. Time in the afternoon at leisure.
Day 8 – Morning departure for Fatima, Portugal, stopping en-route in at the Carmel in Alba de Tormes where St. Teresa’s mortal remains now rest. Late afternoon arrival in Fatima where three shepherd children; Jacinta & Francisco Marto & Lucia Santos, received heavenly apparitions in 1917. Check-in at our hotel near the Fatima Sanctuary, for the next two nights. Nightly Rosary & Candlelight Procession at the Sanctuary.
