Father Samuel Weber, O.S.B. at Star of the Sea for Candlemas Day

On Sunday, February 2nd, Father Samuel Weber, O.S.B., Archdiocesan Director of the Benedict XVI Institute of Sacred Music, will celebrate a Traditional Latin High Mass for the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary at 11:00 A.M. at Star of the Sea Parish, 4420 Geary Boulevard (at 8th Avenue), San Francisco.   This day is also known as Candlemas Day because of the blessing of candles for home and church use and the procession that takes place with lighted candles at the beginning of Mass.   Music will be provided by the Stella Maris Choir.  There is ample parking behind the Church entered through the gates on 8th Avenue.  For further information call the parish at 415-751-0450.

Candlemas Candles for Home Use

 After the solemn blessing of candles on Sunday, February 2nd the Feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Presentation of the Lord, candles for home use will be available from the parish.  These special 51% pure beeswax candles come two per box for a donation of $10.00.  They will be available in the parish office during the weekdays during office hours.

 Feast of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr

 The traditional blessing of throats with blessed candles will take place after the 7:30 A.M.  and 6:30 P.M. Traditional Latin Masses and after the noon Mass on Monday, February 3rd.  At the Latin Masses those who wish the blessing kneel at the communion railing.  The priest says:  Per intercessionem Sancti Blasii, Episcopi et Martyris, liberet te Deus a malo gutturis, et quolibet alio malo.  In nomine Patris, et Filii, + et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.  Translated into English:  Through the intercession of St.Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, may God deliver thee from sickness of the throat and from every other evil.  In the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
